Time to set this blog on fire

Band: Firestone
Album: Stonebeliever EP
Origin: Sweden (Örebro)
Genre: Stoner Rock
Year: 2002

This is the second EP of this great stoner 'n' roll band. They disbanded sadly enough, but that doesn't change the fact that they were awesome. If you like fuzzed out riffs (think Truckfighters, with whom they had a split) than this is what you've been craving for. Enjoy!

...As He Wades Through The Buildings Toward The Center of Town...

Band: Dot [.]
Album: Stay Smoke, Stay Stone EP
Origin: Japan (Tokyo)
Genre: Sludge/Doom, Stoner Metal
Year: 2001

This is a repost in the sense that I originally posted this over at 99 Miles Of Bad Blogs! back when I was a contributor over there, and I've decided that it deserves to be on this blog as well.

Stay Smoke, Stay Stone is the first EP (limited to 332 copies) by Dot, featuring current and former members of Coffins (drummer You and guitarist/vocalist Uchino). They have both left Dot, and although I have nothing against Uchino, I still think it's cool that the guitar duties have been taken over by a tiny lady.
This release contains two long tracks and you can compare them to bands like Electric Wizard, Bongzilla and Weedeater. Enjoy!

Do what we can, summer will have its flies.

Band: Volume
Album: Requesting Permission To Land
Origin: U.S.A. (Los Angeles, California)
Genre: Stoner Rock
Year: 2002

Great record, recommended to any (stoner)rock fan, for the heat wave that I'm suffering through right now. The heat also gives me an excuse for laziness, so I stole the review for this record. Enjoy!

'My neighbor just appeared on his balcony nude. He was there for about a second, but that was a second too much. At least 275 lbs and if I was packing what he was, I wouldn't even appear in front of the mirror nude. Disturbing.

Anyway, back to the issue at hand - LA's Volume. That's right, Los Angeles DOES have a real live rock n' roll band aside from Smoke and whatever project Greg Anderson happens to be involved in.

Volume isn't afraid to wear the LSD n' lipstick stained banner from 1968. This thing screams names you've heard before when referring to the greats... Blue Cheer, MC5, even White Album - era Beatles. So yeah, it's got some retro flavor to it, but 'Acid Rock' is a much better description than the current favorite, 'Stoner Rock'. I mean listen to "Make Believe" and tell me that's not acid-inspired. Listen to last track "Headswim" and tell me that's not BAD acid inspired. The remainder of the album is more Wayne Kramer than Wayne Kramer these days - catchy, fuzz-drenched, and all feel-good. First track "Habit" rocks with a chorus that all addicts, horny humans and leeches of the state can relate to - 'Gimme, gimme all I want, gimme, gimme all I need'. Chances are you fall into one of those three categories. In essence, we can pretty much all relate.

Hats off to guitarist/vocalist Patrick Brink for not only the rock n' roll portion of the disc, but some brilliant cover artwork as well. Also, kudos to ex-Smile and current Fu Manchu skin slammer Scott Reeder for some very Keith Moon-ian drum work on Requesting Permission to Land.

A word of warning - I thought the disc was over after the first listen, so I took a lil' snoozer on the sofa next to my stereo. I was just about to doze off when Patrick's voice comes full blast out of the stereo saying "That's a wrap, momma!". Scared the piss out of me. Fucker. (Chris Barnes, Hellride music)

Summertime, when the living is easy...

Band: Nebula
Album: Sun Creature
Origin: U.S.A. (California)
Genre: Stoner Rock
Year: 1999

This is the second EP by Nebula, released on the famous (but now defunct) Man's Ruin Records. It's the four track version (including Fly On) and it reminds me a lot of Fu Manchu. This is classic stoner rock and more than worthwhile to check out. Enjoy!

Say You Love Satan

Band: Acid King
Album: Live At Roadburn 2007
Origin: U.S.A. (San Francisco, California)
Genre: Stoner/Doom Metal
Year: 2007

By now, Acid King has probably finished their set at Roadburn and I'm guessing that it must have been awesome. So I decided to post this recording of their set at Roadburn 2007. The sound of this bootleg is just amazing(probably soundboard) and the setlist is quite awesome, especially since they open with my favourite track. It's a must have, Enjoy!

Purveyors of sludge / doom since 1993, ACID KING is a great tonic for  sore throat, nausea, hives, itchy rashes, vapors, hysteria, and  general fatigue syndrome. Apply Acid King liberally for up to 1 hour  at a time, then rest in a dark place until symptoms disappear. Acid  King can be used in combination with most other drugs without fear or side effects. When taken with Cannabis and Alcohol, the effects of Acid King may be enhanced. Acid King should only be used responsibly  under the supervision of a licensed healthcare professional. Caution:  there is some evidence that long term use of Acid King may become  addictive.(Roadburn Description)

 Band: Karma To Burn
Album: Incantation's Ingredients
Origin: U.S.A. (Morgantown, West Virginia)
Genre: Stoner Rock
Year: 2010

This one is for Dan, because he always takes the time to comment and I remember him talking about his 'unhealthy' addiction to Karma To Burn. I hope you don't have this one yet (and if you do, well, I'll find something else).

This is a tour EP sold on their pre Appalachian Incantation release tour and it contains several tracks off the album. Including two non-instrumental tracks with vocals by Daniel Davies (Year Long Disaster) and John Garcia (Kyuss, Slo Burn, Unida, Hermano,...).

Caravan Migrates Through Deep Sandscape

Band: Om
Album: Gebel Barkal 7"
Origin: U.S.A. (California)
Genre: Stoner Rock, Psychedelic Rock
Year: 2008

For those who don't know Om yet, it's the band formed by the rythm section of Sleep (Al Cisneros and Chris Hakius) and their style is often described as stoner rock meets Tibetan chanting. This is their first release since Hakius left the band and was replaced by drummer Emil Amos (Grails, Holy Sons). It's part of Sub Pop's Singles Club, limited to 1500 copies and it contains two tracks. The first is Gebal Barkal which manages to keep Om's core business (repetitive stoner rock) fresh by diverting from the old lineup's sound. This is  followed by (version) which is essentially the same song but with added sound effects making it even more psychedelic (especially the organ at the end!). Enjoy!

You take the tank!

Band: Tank86
Album: Ariba
Origin: The Netherlands
Genre: Stoner Rock
Year: 2005

Exams are over, so I'm going to try to be more active again. Let's start with these self-proclaimed Dutch gods of the underground. I got to know Tank86 through Stonerobixxx and I really like their sound. They are instrumental and all about riffs (clearly influenced by Karma to Burn). Ariba was originally released as a split CD with the now defunct bands Willem and Karunga. 500 copies were printed and sold out. You can download the individual tracks for free on the bands website. Enjoy!

I'm just trying to be honest about being a misanthrope

Band: Cuda
Album: Hellfire
Origin: U.S.A. (Madison, Wisconsin?)
Genre: Stoner Rock, Hard Rock
Year: 2001

Finally another post (I am having exams so that's my excuse, again). I can't find much about this one, but it seems to be the side project of two Bongzilla members and the artwork is by the mighty rock art lab Malleus. This EP (I guess it's an EP) contains 4 fast, jam like stoner 'n' roll tracks. It also seems to be their only release. Enjoy!

Line-up:
Cooter Brown - Bass
Spank - Guitar
Nuge - Drums
Gunner - Guitar and Vocals

Stolen beer is the sweetest beer of all

Band: Various Artists
Album: Welcome Back To MeteorCity
Origin: Various
Genre: Stoner Rock, Doom
Year: 2010

I'm finally back, after having been cut off from the internet for way too long. Since I'm already very busy studying, I decided to post this compilation (and a little bit because The Worried Well asked for it). This double disc labelsampler (I personally prefer the second disc) was handed out for free at Roadburn 2010. On the back cover it says that it's an Eco-Pak package. This means that it's an enviromentally friendly alternative to standard jewel case packaging, made from 100% recycled board stock and printed with soy-based ink. In short, it's ugly, but it was also free and it gives you a good idea of what MeteorCity is up to these days. Enjoy!

Disc one:
1) Snail - Mental Models
2) Black Pyramid - Visions Of Gehenna
3) Farflung - Endless Drifting Wreck
4) Leeches Of Lore - I Am The Raptor
5) Let The Night Roar - All Costs
6) Village Of Dead Roads - Chemical Restraint
7) Elder - White Walls
8) Dead Man - Today
9) Valkyrie - Running Out
10) Freedom Hawk - Universal
11) Nightstalker - Enough Is Not Enough
12) Eighteen Wheels Burning - Tears Of The Moon
13) New Keepers Of The Water Towers - Pursuit Of Yeti

Disc two:
1) Humo Del Cairo - A Tiempo
2) Ararat - Gitanoss
3) Sardonis - Nero D'Avola
4) Whitebuzz - The Return Of Phoenix
5) Egypt - Queen Of All Time (Red Giant)
6) Flood - Atlantis
7) Crushed Skulls - March Toward Your Doom

They Come From A Land Down Under...

Band: The Heads/Magic Dirt
Album: Split 7"
Origin: Great Britain (Bristol)/Australia(Geelong)
Genre: Stoner Rock, Psychedelic Rock
Year: 1997

This was a tour split limited to 1000 copies. First track is Dirty Water by The Heads. And it's an awesome psychedelic rock song (as you can expect from such a great band). I've never heard of Magic dirt, but I found out that they are Australian. Their song, Goofy Gumb, can be described as fuzzed out stoner rock with a dose of noisy garage rock. Enjoy!
