...As He Wades Through The Buildings Toward The Center of Town...

Band: Dot [.]
Album: Stay Smoke, Stay Stone EP
Origin: Japan (Tokyo)
Genre: Sludge/Doom, Stoner Metal
Year: 2001

This is a repost in the sense that I originally posted this over at 99 Miles Of Bad Blogs! back when I was a contributor over there, and I've decided that it deserves to be on this blog as well.

Stay Smoke, Stay Stone is the first EP (limited to 332 copies) by Dot, featuring current and former members of Coffins (drummer You and guitarist/vocalist Uchino). They have both left Dot, and although I have nothing against Uchino, I still think it's cool that the guitar duties have been taken over by a tiny lady.
This release contains two long tracks and you can compare them to bands like Electric Wizard, Bongzilla and Weedeater. Enjoy!

Say You Love Satan

Band: Acid King
Album: Live At Roadburn 2007
Origin: U.S.A. (San Francisco, California)
Genre: Stoner/Doom Metal
Year: 2007

By now, Acid King has probably finished their set at Roadburn and I'm guessing that it must have been awesome. So I decided to post this recording of their set at Roadburn 2007. The sound of this bootleg is just amazing(probably soundboard) and the setlist is quite awesome, especially since they open with my favourite track. It's a must have, Enjoy!

Purveyors of sludge / doom since 1993, ACID KING is a great tonic for  sore throat, nausea, hives, itchy rashes, vapors, hysteria, and  general fatigue syndrome. Apply Acid King liberally for up to 1 hour  at a time, then rest in a dark place until symptoms disappear. Acid  King can be used in combination with most other drugs without fear or side effects. When taken with Cannabis and Alcohol, the effects of Acid King may be enhanced. Acid King should only be used responsibly  under the supervision of a licensed healthcare professional. Caution:  there is some evidence that long term use of Acid King may become  addictive.(Roadburn Description)

The Horde Is Coming (Again)!

Band: Khanate
Album: No Joy EP
Origin: U.S.A. (New York City, New York)
Genre: Doom, Drone, Metal, Experimental
Year: 2003

This one is for Darsh, who asked me for some Khanate (I also think that it fits the time of the year). I have actually posted this one before on 99 Miles Of Bad Blogs, back when I was a contributor to that blog. I can still recommend that blog to anyone who likes extreme and heavy music.

Khanate is an extreme doom metal supergroup headed by bassist James Plotkin (O.L.D., Phantomsmasher, ...), guitarist Stephen O'Malley (Sunn O))), Burning Witch, ...), drummer Tim Wyskida (Manbyrd, Blind Idiot God, ...) and vocalist Alan Dubin (O.L.D., Gnaw, ...).

This EP was limited to 2000 copies (300 on red and 1700 on black vinyl) and it contains two tracks. The first one is a remix by James Plotkin of a song from their debut release. The second one is taken from the recording sessions which spawned their next release, Things Viral. Enjoy!

The one that got away

Yes, another compilation, and you can also expect some laziness in my posting since I'm studying for my exams. I stumbled upon this one but I actually can't download it (I'm not on facebook and I hope I never will be). Still, I thought it might be worth posting it, since it's a free sampler from Relapse Records and contains some awesome bands (Baroness, Red Fang, Titan, Cough,...). Enjoy!

Regardless of the fact I/we shouldn't need to convince the public to download this sampler because... well... sampler = free, I/we plan on doing a little persuading... Please refer to list of reason for checking out the sampler below:

Finally...

Band: Pelican
Album: Pink Mammoth EP
Origin: U.S.A. (Chicago, Illinois)
Genre: Metal, Experimental
Year: 2007

This EP contains only 2 tracks. The first one, Pink Mammoth, is an updated version of Mammoth from Pelican's first EP. The second track, End of Seasons, is a remix/mashup by Prefuse 73 using Aurora Borealis and the untitled track from The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw. It's actually a good combination, the first track being more metal like while the second track is much more ambient.  Enjoy (Yes, I promise that more will come and hopefully a lot faster)!

The first empty bottle that makes me smile...

Band: Boris
Album: Live At Empty Bottle, Chicago, 20/07/08 Bootleg
Origin: Japan (Tokyo)
Genre: Metal, Punk, Drone, Shoegaze, Experimental
Year: 2008

This is a bootleg from Boris (with Michio Kurihara) after they played the Pitchfork Music Festival that very same day. They apparently succeeded in blowing out the power twice at the festival (and after the second time they just called it quits). The Empty Bottle luckily had the juice to support a Boris gig. The setlist is basically Smile with pink and rainbow thrown in. Enjoy!

Setlist:
1) Flower Sun Rain
2) Buzz-in
3) Laser Beam
4) Pink
5) Statement
6) Floorshaker
7) Rainbow

A Blunt Cobra

Band: Black Cobra
Album: Black Cobra EP
Origin: U.S.A. (Los Angeles, California)
Genre: Sludge, Doom, Metal
Year: 2004

Black Cobra is a two man band that plays thick dirty sludgy doom. Drums are handled by Rafael Martinez (also bassist for Acid King) with Jason Landrian (formerly Cavity) playing guitar. This Ep was self-released on cd but has been re-released on 7" by Blackflash Records in 2006. It has only three short songs, but it gives you a good idea of what this band is all about. Enjoy!
(and yes, I am going to try to keep that promise of posting more often).

Did You Drink Spermatozoa?

Band: Boris
Album: Demo Vol. 3
Origin: Japan (Tokyo)
Genre: Metal, Doom
Year: 1994

I know it has been a while so I'm making it up with this gem. It's a rip of one of the two known Boris demo tapes. This means that it is one of the rare recordings with Nagata on drums (it also labels Takeshi as Otani). The quality is great and you can really hear how they are influenced by The Melvins on these recordings.
You can find the artwork here. Enjoy!

Tracklist:
1) Scar Box "Misery in your arms."
2) Mosquito "Knife blowing in to my eyes."
3) Matozoa "Did you drink spermatozoa?"
4) Deep Sucker "Taking ever harpy."

Boris - Demo Vol. 3

P.S. : The file contains 2 extra songs, Loud and Water Porch. I think they are hidden tracks on the tape.

The King's Name Is A Tower Of Strength.

Band: Isis
Album: SGNL>05
Origin: U.S.A. (Los Angeles, California)
Genre: Metal, Experimental
Year: 2001

I saw these guys last night, and they were awesome. But I'm still tired because of that so, here you go:

"SGNL>05 was originally released inbetween Isis's debut album 'Celestial' and their second 'Oceanic', it's hard to define it as merely an EP or a stopgap though. At 35 minutes in length, it is easily as long as many classic albums, and Neurot recordings have been kind enough to re-issue it fleshed out with an exclusive remix from Brummie industrial metal don Justin Broadrick (Jesu, Final, ex-Godflesh, ex-Napalm Death). The music itself is quite different from the 'proper' Isis albums which is maybe why it didn't receive quite so much hype on it's original release, but this is exactly what makes it so interesting. The album starts with the title track, a Lynchian mix of tape recorded piano and industrial clanks and groans - killer intro, only 3 minutes in and we're blasted into the Neurosis-style metallic epic 'Divine Mother' which surely ranks as one of the bands most crushing tracks. At this point they had not defined their 'post-metal' sound quite so obviously, but the traces of this are present and obvious in 'SGNL>05' far more than with 'Celestial'. Third track 'Beneath Below' takes an overdriven drum line and drenches it in ancient synthesizer sounds and 'Constructing Towers' is Isis at their droning, epic and harmonic best. 5 years on since its original release there are quite a few more open minded metal fans in the world and 'SGNL>05' is a crucial jigsaw piece in the history of one of the scene's finest acts. Highly recommended." (Boomkat)
