I've never made it a secret that I am an enormous fanboy when it comes to Boris. So when I stumbled upon this footage, I just couldn't believe it. Never before have I seen any images, let alone footage of Boris from back when they were a four piece. We have a short haired Takeshi on a single bass (adorned with a sticker of a weed leaf), Atsuo handling only vocal duties (but already wearing flashy shirts) and the mysterious Nagata manning the drums while a long haired Wata is moving more than, well, a Wata (yes, that is an existing unit of measurement). She moves so much that I almost have trouble believing that this is the same Wata who stoically launches mind destroying riffs. Enjoy!

As my third and final 'gift', I present to you Oneida's seven hour jam session at ATP's I'll Be Your Mirror event (curated by Portishead) in a New Jersey bowling alley, of all places!

"The Ocropolis is Oneida's multidisciplinary studio/performance space in the basement of the Monster Island arts building, located in Williamsburg Brooklyn. Built by Oneida and their friends in 2005, this studio has become a renowned source of recordings by Black Dice, Growing, Sightings, Trans Am, Liturgy, White Hills, and (of course) Oneida. It has also played host to a number of intimate Oneida public performances over the past several years.

In the third installment of an ongoing collaboration between the band and All Tomorrow’s Parties, Oneida will present a special all-day installation in which the impetus, spirit and community of the Ocropolis will be transported to the festival grounds for a full day of improvisation, collaboration, and recording, open to all festival attendees. Numerous musicians and performers have participated in prior installments of this 12-hour nonstop event, including Boredoms, Flaming Lips, Deerhoof, the Dead C, Mike Watt, Akron/Family, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and many more.

The performance will encompass a full day of improvisation and collaboration that is intended to recreate the band's approach to recording and performing – an event usually restricted to the smallest audiences – and as always, projections, lights and visual improvisatory collaboration will be provided by the Secret Project Robot crew (fellow denizens of the Monster Island community). This performance will follow the June release of Absolute II, the final installment in the band’s Thank Your Parents series of recordings." (atpfestival.com)

The whole session has been recorded by NPR, split up in three parts which you can download and/or stream. They have also been so friendly to provide a timeline with a rough order of guest performers (members from Portishead, Boredoms, et al.).

To make up for my absence (again), I'm going to do three days of Christmas gifts. Not that I really care much about the holidays, so regard these gifts as antidotes for the overdose of holiday happiness and everything that comes with it.

If you don't know The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble, these are the basics. TDKE was founded by Jason Köhnen (Bong-Ra) and Gideon Kiers (Telcosystems) as a project to compose new music for existing silent movies (Nosferatu, Metropolis,...). It's a jazz band, but far from traditional, throwing in ambient and electronic music (calling it 'Mutant Jazz' themselves).

The band also has an alter ego in the form of The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation, which focuses more on improvisation, darker drones and of course jazz.

They offer this live record for free on their bandcamp page, in different formats.You'll find this record to be the perfect counterpoint to the busy days ahead. Enjoy!

I got to know this band through Trippy Jam and I absolutely love it. The Heavy Friends is, despite the name, a one man band from Tokyo and the man behind it, Takashi, is not afraid to show his influences on his sleeve. Let's just do some namedropping: Boris, Les Rallizes Dénudés, My Bloody Valentine, The Cure, Jimi Hendrix, etc. Expect long jams with a repetitive rhythm section and noisy psychedelic guitar outbursts supported by some melancholic vocals. Since his name is taken from the first track on Heavy Rocks (Boris), I wonder if the title of this record comes from Black Hole Sun (Soundgarden). Not that it matters, this is the kind of awesome psychedelic noise rock one should indulge in. Enjoy!

Snares is an alias of breakcore artist Venetian Snares, but instead of his usual style, he goes for dubstep on this release. This release, sadly enough, contains only two tracks. The first one is a cover of Black Sabbath, the second one a cover of Electric Funeral. The latter also contains vocal samples from an interview with Ozzy Osbourne where he says: "I always believed...it's never going to get any better than what is now...I can't see beyond the Black Sabbath, I can't see anything without the Black Sabbath."

Band: Corrupted

For those who don't know Corrupted, they're a japanese sludge/doom band (considered to be pioneers in their genre) who mostly sing in spanish (though sometimes in japanese and english as well). They also have a strict policy of not allowing interviews or promo photo shoots and are known for their reclusiveness.

Although they are famous for having a couple of one track records, it seemed a better idea to introduce them with two singles. Both are released on the same label (HG Fact) limited to a 1000 copies and with the same minimalistic black cover art. They also have the same name for both sides although the tracks are all different. Musically, Vasana has two brutal tracks while An Island Insane has a more spaced out sound (the second track being acoustic guitar mixed with a bunch of distortion). Enjoy!

It's time for some Ancestors, so here's their first record. Ancestors is a five piece psychedelic band that seems to have found a perfect formula for combining heavy riffs with spaced out psychedelic jams. Neptune With Fire contains only two tracks, Orcus Avarice (16:48 minutes) and the title track (21:39 minutes), and in this humble whale's opinion, both conjure up images of sea wether it's a storm, or the calmness that precedes it.
Although it's their first record and their follow up material gets even better, this is still a great starting point. Enjoy!

When it comes to Merzbow, I'm mostly in to his collaborations (like with Boris or Porn). Having said that, I have to admit that I quite like this one. Now, as with most of his records, this is very loud free form noise. It's a massive 35 minute blast of noise (divided in two tracks), but the most interesting part is that it has live drumming (by Masami Akita himself). It's not an easy record, but if you like noise, you might just like this. Enjoy!

As the title says, it's live from the Flux Factory in Queens, New York and it contains two tracks. The first (Return To Nothing) is a 28 minute live piece while the second (Nothing To Return) is a remix by Gerrit Wittmer. Enjoy!

Stay Smoke, Stay Stone is the first EP (limited to 332 copies) by Dot, featuring current and former members of Coffins (drummer You and guitarist/vocalist Uchino). They have both left Dot, and although I have nothing against Uchino, I still think it's cool that the guitar duties have been taken over by a tiny lady.
This release contains two long tracks and you can compare them to bands like Electric Wizard, Bongzilla and Weedeater. Enjoy!

Great record, recommended to any (stoner)rock fan, for the heat wave that I'm suffering through right now. The heat also gives me an excuse for laziness, so I stole the review for this record. Enjoy!

'My neighbor just appeared on his balcony nude. He was there for about a second, but that was a second too much. At least 275 lbs and if I was packing what he was, I wouldn't even appear in front of the mirror nude. Disturbing.

Anyway, back to the issue at hand - LA's Volume. That's right, Los Angeles DOES have a real live rock n' roll band aside from Smoke and whatever project Greg Anderson happens to be involved in.

Volume isn't afraid to wear the LSD n' lipstick stained banner from 1968. This thing screams names you've heard before when referring to the greats... Blue Cheer, MC5, even White Album - era Beatles. So yeah, it's got some retro flavor to it, but 'Acid Rock' is a much better description than the current favorite, 'Stoner Rock'. I mean listen to "Make Believe" and tell me that's not acid-inspired. Listen to last track "Headswim" and tell me that's not BAD acid inspired. The remainder of the album is more Wayne Kramer than Wayne Kramer these days - catchy, fuzz-drenched, and all feel-good. First track "Habit" rocks with a chorus that all addicts, horny humans and leeches of the state can relate to - 'Gimme, gimme all I want, gimme, gimme all I need'. Chances are you fall into one of those three categories. In essence, we can pretty much all relate.

Hats off to guitarist/vocalist Patrick Brink for not only the rock n' roll portion of the disc, but some brilliant cover artwork as well. Also, kudos to ex-Smile and current Fu Manchu skin slammer Scott Reeder for some very Keith Moon-ian drum work on Requesting Permission to Land.

A word of warning - I thought the disc was over after the first listen, so I took a lil' snoozer on the sofa next to my stereo. I was just about to doze off when Patrick's voice comes full blast out of the stereo saying "That's a wrap, momma!". Scared the piss out of me. Fucker. (Chris Barnes, Hellride music)

First of all, a small introduction to Meadows. They formed out of the ashes of various stoner rock and doom bands and have been described as 'sludge/grind/doom for fans of Napalm Death, Eyehategod, Grief and Converge.'

Now let's talk music. All four tracks on this release (recorded 'in a dingy, dirty factory in the heart of rural suffolk') seem to follow the same (excellent) recipe: take some crusty punk riffs, add some oppressive sludge riffs, throw in some roaring vocals and finish it with some feedback. It's really awesome stuff, and recommended to anybody who likes heavy music. Maybe even more important to add is that Meadows brings it with a groove which proves to me that they are probably a killer live band. I can honestly say that I hope to see and hear more by Meadows in the future.

I'm still listening to a lot of Japanese Psych Rock, so I'll probably post some more records in that vein.

The four members of Bo Ningen (meaning Stick Men) were born and raised in Japan and moved independently to London to study where they met and formed a kick ass band. They are described as Black Sabbath meets Can and are compared to other Japanese outfits like Acid Mothers Temple, Boris, Melt-Banana and Boredoms.
This is their first EP (limited to 100 copies on CDr and 200 copies on vinyl) and the only thing I have heard so far, but I already love 'em.

I'm including a stolen review simply because it's by the awesome Stewart Lee and two clips (check youtube for a ton more if you like 'em). Enjoy!

Although everybody probably already knows this, I'm still making a post out of it (hey, I'm just a fanboy).
Boris is releasing a shit load of records these coming months. They already released a collaboration with Merzbow titled Klatter and a collaboration between Atsuo and Stephen O'Malley titled Uroborus Circuit. In march they will be releasing New Album and in April Attention Please and Heavy Rocks.
To make things clear, Heavy Rocks will be a new album but with the same title and artwork (in purple) as Heavy Rocks from 2002 and it will have contributions from the following guest artists: Michio Kurihara (White Heaven, The Stars,...), Ian Astbury (The Cult), Kensuke Saito (9dw), Yoshiko Kawakita (D-Day), Faith Coloccia (Mamiffer) and Aaron Turner (Isis, Mamiffer,...).
"The band is bringing back the title because the new album 'seeks to redefine 'heavy' music in a culmination of the band's tireless efforts over the past two decades."

On Attention Please Wata will perform lead vocals for every track and you can already listen to one of those tracks here, and New album is described as an 'extreme pop' record and also has one song available (see below).

Finally something that isn't a single. This split is a perfect introduction to the two bands that are involved. First up is Kodiak, a German drone/doom outfit, with MCCCXLIX The Rising End, a bleak twenty minute piece starting off with some drones which culminate in to some heavy doom riffing. Remarkable is their simple use of a piano to set the mood in the beginning and at the end of the piece. The second track (also about twenty minutes), Kitsune Fox Drone, is by Canadian dronegazers (yup, just made that one up) Nadja. It's a lot less dark, mostly because it's more about fuzzy drones and swirling guitars than heavy riffs, which makes it perfect after Kodiak. Enjoy!

Here's a cool split (limited to a 1000 copies) by Tee Pee Records label mates Ancestors and Graveyard. First up is Ancestors with Antler Wings. A cool track but I do think that their mix of prog, psychedelic rock and metal (think Neurosis meets King Crimson) works better in a longer format (their tracks are usually at least ten minutes long). Next up is Graveyard with a live rendition of As Years Pass By, The Hours Bend. I really love how these Swedes bring a kick ass emulation of 70's heavy rock and their self-titled record is definitely worth checking out. Enjoy!

My exams are almost over after which I promise to post more often. In the meanwhile some more Bohren & Der Club Of Gore. This is a split EP with Wald. I can't find much information on that artist except that it is a certain Mark Sikora who is a german videoclip director (Midnight Black Earth and Prowler For Bohren) and graphic designer (covers for Napalm death). He has six short tracks ranging from noisy metal outbursts to mesmerizing droning guitar loops. Bohren has only one track (as long as all of Wald's tracks combined), which sounds very different from their later output (mind you, this was only their second release as far as I know). It has more of a metal sound than a jazz vibe to it and it reminds me of Ennio Morricone or latter day Earth mixed with some doom. They seem to have had that very deep bass sound from their beginning though (I just love the contrabass). Enjoy!

Yet another quick post with a lame title. This one fitting in my plan to expand the music genres available on this blog.
Fuck Buttons are a British band that mix electronic music with a good amount of noise and some droning (partly achieved by manipulating children's toys!). This is the single for their second record, Tarot Sport, containing two tracks. The first one is an edited version of the opening track from Tarot Sport (Surf Solar) featuring a strong beat overpowered by noisy synths (or toys or whatever) and some added sounds. Feels a bit like taking xtc on a construction site (if construction workers played synthesizers that is). The second track (New Crossbow) feels more like slowly coming down, being more ambient and less harsh even though the drums have a strong tribal feeling to it. Enjoy!

This one is for Darsh, who asked me for some Khanate (I also think that it fits the time of the year). I have actually posted this one before on 99 Miles Of Bad Blogs, back when I was a contributor to that blog. I can still recommend that blog to anyone who likes extreme and heavy music.

Khanate is an extreme doom metal supergroup headed by bassist James Plotkin (O.L.D., Phantomsmasher, ...), guitarist Stephen O'Malley (Sunn O))), Burning Witch, ...), drummer Tim Wyskida (Manbyrd, Blind Idiot God, ...) and vocalist Alan Dubin (O.L.D., Gnaw, ...).

This EP was limited to 2000 copies (300 on red and 1700 on black vinyl) and it contains two tracks. The first one is a remix by James Plotkin of a song from their debut release. The second one is taken from the recording sessions which spawned their next release, Things Viral. Enjoy!

For those who don't know Om yet, it's the band formed by the rythm section of Sleep (Al Cisneros and Chris Hakius) and their style is often described as stoner rock meets Tibetan chanting. This is their first release since Hakius left the band and was replaced by drummer Emil Amos (Grails, Holy Sons). It's part of Sub Pop's Singles Club, limited to 1500 copies and it contains two tracks. The first is Gebal Barkal which manages to keep Om's core business (repetitive stoner rock) fresh by diverting from the old lineup's sound. This is followed by (version) which is essentially the same song but with added sound effects making it even more psychedelic (especially the organ at the end!). Enjoy!

I actually always wanted this blog to be quite diverse in the music that it offers, but somehow I got stuck on stoner rock and the likes. So this is my first attempt to expand this blog a little bit and post music from the other genres that I enjoy (jazz, folk, electro, hip-hop, classical music, etc).

Bohren & Der Club Of Gore is a german jazz band that plays a crossover of jazz and ambient music. They describe their own sound as an “unholy ambient mixture of slow jazz ballads, Black Sabbath Doom and down tuned Autopsy sounds”. I have to say that I really love this band and I felt so lucky to be able to watch them perform at Roadburn last year. This is their contribution to the latitudes sessions:

"In the style of John Peel's legendary BBC-Sessions, Southern Records started with the Latitude-Series a similar project - a never-to be-repeated series of session recordings in a limited edition, recorded and mixed in one day in Southern's London Studios. The 10-minutes track Mitleid Lady is the contribution of Bohren & Der Club of Gore to this Latitude-Serie."

Doctor Doctor Gimme Gas In My Ass

I went to watch this awesome movie at the film festival in my town two days ago. It's a swedish movie and I can recommend it to anybody who likes music or just a good and funny movie. The directors were both present at the screening for a Q&A and they revealed some extra information: The drummers in it are real drummers, the sounds aren't faked and it's based on a short film they made in 2001 called "Music for one apartment and six drummers"(with the same six drummers). I got to know Tank86 through Stonerobixxx and I really like their sound. They are instrumental and all about riffs (clearly influenced by Karma to Burn). I just discovered that my exams will last a few more days extra, so I decided to post something small to chew on while I study some medieval philosophy. I have just discovered this guitar/bass duo and I'm really enjoying this EP. Still, I'm tired and whatnot so I'm taking the lazy route, this is what the label writes about it:

A 3" CD packaged in a standard jewel-case, "The Mountain EP" finds Destructo Swarmbots (Mike Mare and James O'Brien) exploring a more delicate and subtle space than previous releases. The two man guitar and bass team, known for it's abrasive sonic attacks, take their layers of manipulated dissonance and situate them in subtle ambient landscapes. The tracks range from "36 beautiful songs" which plays like an condensed and intensified version of Fripp and Eno's "An Index of Metals." to the somber "saving grace on an 8 hour connection" which finds the group delving into more traditional melodic structures.

This means that it's an enviromentally friendly alternative to standard jewel case packaging, made from 100% recycled board stock and printed with soy-based ink. Church Of Misery is one of the many bands that I hope to see live at Roadburn. This is their latest EP and it contains 3 unreleased tracks recorded between 2006 and 2008. Although they are considered to be doom metal, the first track, Jonestown Massacre (Jim Jones), is 12 minutes of fast paced psychedelic hard rock. The next two tracks are considerably shorter and both seem to be covers from German songs. The first (Der Hund Von Baskerville) is Paranoid from Black Sabbath in German. The second track (Marmor Stein Und Eisen Bricht) sounds familiar, but it also sounds very strange. This was limited to only a 100 copies. Enjoy!

Fuzzed out, feedback drenched, bass-heavy, droning noisy stoner rock. That's how I would describe Skullflower. I discovered this band because they were invited by Neurosis to play Beyond The Pale at Roadburn. This is their first release which explains the very minimal and basic production. It's very hypnotic, with lots of delay and feedback, tribal like drumming and almost hidden vocals. The song structures are provided mostly by the bass and the drums while the guitars just freak out. Enjoy!

Blue Cheer is rightfully considered to be one of the pioneers of heavy and psychedelic rock and this record alone has earned them a place in the rock and roll pantheon. I wouldn't know how to review this record so just get it, you won't regret it!

...Blue Cheer were not just knockin’ on Heavy’s door and they weren’t invited, either: they broke on through it, tore off the hinges, tore up the threshold, took a huge chunk outta each side of the wall and then dropped a huge napalm log in the fireplace and split. I could review this great single, but this whale is very tired so I'm going to post Lorenzo Woodrose (the band's main man) his comments on both songs. Enjoy!

"Coming Around Again" could have been a hit for anybody, except we ended up playing it a bit too fast and adding lots of over the top twangy surf guitar and beeping Farfisa organ that kind of detract from it's easy listening qualities. The end result is somewhat bubblegum sounding. Some uplifting lyrics about coming back up after having been down for some time. This one turned out much better than I thought it would during mixing. This was actually considered for "Chasing Rainbows" album quite a lot.

"I Feel High" is really different. If it wasn't for the lyrical theme (sex, drugs, rock'n'roll) it would have fit well on the Chasing Rainbows album, where I deliberately wanted to go a bit deeper with my subject matter. Acoustic guitar, bass, tambourine and a hauntingly hypnotic Farfisa organ. We actually recorded this as a band, but felt it worked better sounding a bit folky and psychedelic. The intro was later pasted on, consisting of backwards drums and distant fuzzguitar".

Black Cobra is a two man band that plays thick dirty sludgy doom. Drums are handled by Rafael Martinez (also bassist for Acid King) with Jason Landrian (formerly Cavity) playing guitar. This Ep was self-released on cd but has been re-released on 7" by Blackflash Records in 2006. It has only three short songs, but it gives you a good idea of what this band is all about. Enjoy!

"More Nadja, this time its free too, which can only be a good thing although the trouble with free stuff is that it can on occasion guarantee crapness in the musical department. Luckily, the two tracks here are not in that department and showcase more of the ambient doom drone we have come to expect from Aidan and Leah. With this release one track is new, one is old, yet both melt into each other perfectly. Opener Base Fluid is the newest of the two tracks and is slightly more ambient than anything else they have done recalling Aidan Bakers solo work at parts. Its got a killer opening and towards the end the tightness of the duo becomes very clear. The second track Numb is more of a chillout piece, at least for the first half anyway. At times almost reminiscent of Jesu at times, certainly much more in the ambient department than doom, with synths taking presence over full on heaviness, that's not to say this isn't loud and heavy, its just not depending on the trick of deafening people. Again, you can't really go wrong with Nadja, and these two tracks are totally free so you may as well have a listen, cant be that bad right?" (Nothingatall.net)

I know it has been a while so I'm making it up with this gem. It's a rip of one of the two known Boris demo tapes. This means that it is one of the rare recordings with Nagata on drums (it also labels Takeshi as Otani). The quality is great and you can really hear how they are influenced by The Melvins on these recordings.
